Botulinum toxin for hyperhidrosis - minimally invasive option with excessive sweating
Hyperhidrosis: discrete therapy option with botulinum toxin
Sweating fulfills an important function in the human body: it ensures the regulation of the body temperature and helps to avoid overheating in the event of heat or physical exertion. But in some people, this mechanism gets out of balance: even with slight physical activity, in stressful situations or even in rest, there are strong welding on armpits, hands, feet or other parts of the body. This form of excessive sweating is called primary hyperhidrosis. For those affected, it is more than a cosmetic problem: clothing is constantly soaked, shaking hands to the hurdle, which suffers social well -being.
In private practice Schoenheits-Hand-Werk in Wallerfangen, Dr. med. Gunther Oldag aims at a targeted, minimally invasive treatment with botulinum toxin, with the aim of noticeably reducing sweat production in the affected areas for several months.
What is hyperhidrosis?
Hyperhidrosis describes excessive welding production that cannot be explained by external factors such as heat or physical exertion. It usually occurs symmetrical, e.g. B. on both armpits, both palms or soles. The sweat occurs independently of temperature or stress and can significantly impair everyday life.
A distinction is made between primary hyperhidrosis (without recognizable physical cause) and secondary hyperhidrosis (as a result of other diseases or medication).
How does botulinum toxin work with excessive sweating?
Botulinum toxin is a biologically generated protein that specifically blocks the signal transmission between the nerve and gland or muscle. In the treatment of hyperhidrosis, the property is used that toxin inhibits the release of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. This messenger is responsible for activating the sweat glands.
Due to the targeted injection of botulinum toxin into the affected skin areas, the activity of the sweat glands is significantly reduced without destroying them permanently. The effect begins after about 4 days, the maximum result can be achieved after about 4 weeks. The skin stays dry, the sweating allows noticeably - the effect usually lasts 4 months, depending on the individual activity, metabolism and treatment region.
In which cases is the treatment recommended?
Botulinum toxin therapy for hyperhidrosis can be useful if:
- Conventional measures such as antiperspirants are not sufficient,
- the sweating is socially or professionally stressful,
- Clothing is regularly sweated through,
- Medical causes were excluded,
- an operational intervention (e.g. sweat gland removal) is not desired.
Before treatment takes place, we take time for a detailed medical history and advice in our practice for aesthetic medicine and surgery. We clarify whether the requirements for botulinum toxin therapy are met and whether alternative measures should be considered.
Which regions can be treated?
In our practice, we mainly treat the following areas:
- Armpits (axillary hyperhidrosis)
- Handtacks (Palmar)
- Sol soles (plantar)
Other places (e.g. forehead or back) are also possible in principle, but must be checked individually. Treatment in the armpit area has particularly proven, since a great effect can be achieved with relatively little active ingredient - with good tolerance and suitability for everyday use.
Whether you are often the focus of your profession, suffer from wet hands in everyday life or simply want to wear clothes again - we advise you openly and honestly.

Process of treatment in our practice
- Advice & diagnostics: Oldag discusses your symptoms, possible triggers, previous illnesses and your expectations. If necessary, a simple welding test will be determined to determine the affected area.
- Education & planning: We explain the mode of action, the possible effects, the treatment process and the expected duration. Questions about compatibility or repetition are discussed in detail.
- Injection: With a very fine needle, the botulinum toxin by Dr. med. Gunther Oldag superficially injected into the sweat area. Depending on the region, around 10 to 20 small injections are necessary for this. The treatment takes about 20 to 30 minutes.
- Aftercare: After the botulinum toxin treatment, you are immediately socially acceptable. Sauna, sport and intensive warmth should be avoided for 48 hours. Slight redness or swelling are rare and quickly resolve.
How long does the effect last?
A first noticeable reduction in sweat production is usually a few days after the treatment, mostly around the 4th day. The maxum is reached after about 4 weeks. The duration of action is approx. 4 months, but can vary individually, depending on the sweat gland activity, region and metabolism. After that, the treatment can be repeated if necessary.
Treatment is not permanent because the effect of botulinum toxin decreases over time. With regular use, however, the effect may be stabilized.
What options does therapy with botulinum toxin offer?
- Fast effect: The first results are usually noticeable a few days after the injection - in many patients, sweating decreases significantly
- Connection accurately: only the glands concerned are treated - no impairment of other body functions
- No downtime: they are directly back and socially acceptable
- Reversible: The effect is limited in time, a repetition is possible, but not mandatory
- Mental relieving: Many affected people report more self -confidence and quality of life
Are there risks or side effects?
Treatment with botulinum toxin is very well tolerated in the right dosage. In rare cases it can be:
- slight redness or small bruises at the puncture sites,
- a temporary feeling of tension or
- a short -term weakness when treating the hands.
Heavy side effects are extremely rare. It is important that the treatment takes place exclusively by an experienced doctor-as with us in practice Schoenheits-Hand-Werk.
Is the result visible immediately?
No. The effect begins after about 4 days and is fully developed after 4 weeks.
Can I do sports after the treatment?
Not directly. For 48 hours, heavy physical stress or intensive heat such as sauna or solarium should be avoided.
Is the treatment painful?
The injections are usually easy to endure. On request, a local narcotics can be applied.
Will sweating on other parts of the body stronger?
No. It is only reduced locally on the region treated. A so-called compensatory effect is extremely rare in botulinum toxin therapy.
Do I have to repeat the treatment regularly?
Not mandatory. A repetition only makes sense if the effect subsides and continues to exist. The decision is made individually.
